About Me

I am a Somali American immigrant and military veteran who came to the United States as the only member of my family. I learned very early in life that I needed to work ten times harder to set myself up for success and achieve my goals. I bring fresh perspectives that aren't currently represented in our City government. I live in New Brighton with my wife and son and I am committed to making the city hospitable and a place where all children can thrive and live up to their true potential. I believe I can help our city become more inclusive and responsive to the needs of all of its residents. As a city planner, I am dedicated to improving people’s quality of life, especially the most vulnerable members of our community such as young children, senior citizens, people with disabilities, low-income families, and historically marginalized communities. I have a true passion for fostering an inclusive environment and fixing systemic injustices that disproportionately affect Black, Indigenous, and People of Color.

I hold a Bachelor of Science in Construction Management, Master of Arts in Urban Planning, and a Graduate Certificate in Local Government Management. I worked for the Community Development division of the Metropolitan Council and the City of Minneapolis as an Urban Scholar during the two years of graduate school.

I currently work for the City of Minneapolis as an Associate Transportation Planner, managing capital projects, such as street reconstruction, mill and overlay, and pedestrian and bicycle improvement projects. In my current role at the City, I am involved in community engagement efforts that are meant to ensure the projects we deliver have equitable outcomes for all members of the communities we serve.
